NEED-BASED VALUE MATRIX
How do you distinguish value to preserve from needs that warrant further investigation?
The matrix crosses Value Horizons with the value chain to prevent fragmented decisions across strategy, product, sales, operations, and monetization.
Value does not begin with the product. It begins with a Need.
The Need-Based Value Matrix keeps the need connected to the decisions that follow, without turning every possibility into a new priority.
The central question is not “what can we build?”, but “what value does this need justify creating, sustaining and capturing?”
A simple direction. A demanding decision.
The need is the starting point. The organization then decides how to generate enough value for that value to be perceived, sustained and economically captured.
Protect, expand and innovate without losing the Need.
Decisions can protect current value, expand into adjacent spaces or create new sources of value. The horizon changes, but the requirement remains: the need must justify the transformation it demands from the organization.
More value does not justify any amount of complexity.
The matrix also works as protection against dispersion. A new initiative must demonstrate not only potential value, but coherence between the need, delivery chain, value capture, and additional complexity.
The question is not only “can this create value?” but “does this need justify the additional system we will have to sustain?”
How to cite the Need-Based Value Matrix.
Before placing a need in a quadrant, what evidence on relevance and fulfillment do you already have? The framework organizes the choice; research provides evidence about needs. Explore the methodology or follow Priority to continue learning.
The essentials about the Need-Based Value Matrix.
Where is your organization creating value?
And where is it only adding structure?
The Need-Based Value Matrix organizes decisions across the value chain and helps connect strategy, execution, and value capture without losing sight of the need that originated the decision.
